How to store furniture for moving

If you opt for a professional mover, carefully study their prices and the services offered. There are plenty of moving companies and some even pack your dishes and store them in your cupboards.

Choose your moving truck

If you are moving alone, renting a truck is a must. Size of the vehicle, duration and progress of the rental are all criteria to be taken into account to avoid worries and additional costs. Plan, also, spacious cars to avoid too many round trips. Another essential, straps and thick fabrics to secure and protect your furniture. A hand truck can also be very useful for carrying several boxes at the same time.

  • Make sure the furniture fitd through doors, windows, stairwells and elevators. Also consider parking.
  • Evacuate room by room and assign a role to each. So and so is tasked with dismantling the last pieces of furniture while another takes care of loading the truck. An operation that requires a dash of logic and a hint of common sense.
  • At the bottom of the truck, we place bedding, large furniture and major household appliances. In height, small furniture and light boxes are placed while the heaviest boxes are positioned on the ground to avoid settling and breakage. In general, nothing should move. Everything must be firmly anchored.

How to store and organise your boxes

To save money, you can collect boxes from those around you. But if you choose to opt for tailor-made, be aware that there are boxes of all sizes in the trade. Also, keep old newspapers to protect your belongings . For fragile items, opt for bubble wrap . They will thus be perfectly protected.

Then, make the boxes piece by piece. Avoid “catch-all” boxes as much as possible. Write on the side and above, where it should be deposited, and what it contains. Specify if it is fragile. The more you organize the packing, the faster the unpacking will go.

Do not hesitate to fill the boxes well, in order to prevent them from crushing during transport. A well-filled box is more rigid and retains its shape better.

Tape the bottom of the box to avoid unpleasant surprises. But, be careful, don't overfill them with books or heavy things. On the contrary, try to balance them by positioning large objects in the bottom and lighter objects on top. A hand truck can also be very useful for carrying several boxes at the same time.

Wash dishes or linens before putting them in boxes. You'll feel more comfortable in a clean new home with clean things.
