How to paint exterior woodwork

Thinking about painting your wall yourself? we've put together a few steps for you to follow to get you on the right track.

Prepare your wood

Fill the dents

Mix the paint

Apply the top coat

If painted

• Sand off old paint or varnish.

• Usa a stripper to speed up the process and wait until the old paint starts to blister.

• Use a trowel or scrub brush to lift the paint.

• Rinse with water or spirits.

• Flakes are toxic so rather take them to a waste centre for disposal and recycling.

If stained

• Remove flakes witha a brush and sand with the grain to removestain.

• Remove dust.

If bare wood

• Sand gently with the grain.

• Remove dust.

• Fill the dents in wood using a filler if needed.

• Add additional protection by adding insecticide or antifungal treatment.

Mix paint thoroughly and use a precision brush to paint detail and grooves then use a roller in a criss cross method to get full application.

Sheep skin or foam roller is best for larger spaces.

• Add a topcoat armour against weather.
